Peace, Security and Emergency

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a programme for the prevention of violence and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. In Cameroon, the CPS contributes to nonviolent conflict transformation of existing violent conflicts, to preventing the escalation of violence and strengthening social cohesion. GIZ’s newly designed CPS programme plans to support civil society partners in their collective goal-oriented commitment to a non-violent transformation of conflicts, the improvement of social relations through dialogue, and the practice of democratic participation of young people. In addition, measures of psychosocial support will be developed with the partners and their target groups for dealing with the psychosocial consequences of violence and polarisation.
Development of the conceptual design and implementation of measures for dialogue and civil society cooperation in close cooperation with partners and the CPS team
Advisor to the CPS team for the development of a philosophy of dialogue in its programme design, planification and implementation
Accompaniment of current and future CPS partner organisations in assessing of needs for dialogue and civil society cooperation as well as identification of potential new partner organisations
Facilitate cooperation and networking among civil society organisations based on dialogue orientated cooperation and on common capacity development for dialogue
Support CPS partner organisation in developing and implementing a strategy for capacity building for dialogue facilitators
Support the development and the implementation of an impact orientated monitoring tool for dialogue and civil society cooperation with partner organisations and the CPS team
Support the integration of conflict sensitivity, human rights-based approach and a gender perspective in all dialogue measures
Documentation of learning experiences and good practices for knowledge management among the CPS team, CPS of GIZ and the CPS consortium
Master’s degree in social or political sciences, peace and conflict studies, pedagogics, social work or any other relevant domain
First expertise and practical experience in the areas of dialogue, conflict analysis and conflict transformation
Proven experience in advising different stakeholders in the context of dialogue projects
Professional experience in fragile contexts and work experience in Africa; knowledge about Cameroon is an added value
Partner oriented work skills
Strong analytical skills for understanding a complex culture and multilayered conflict lines
Patience and high frustration tolerance are needed as well as proven ability to work in a team
Fluency in English and French

Your work will begin with an onboarding and preparation phase that will give you initial insights into GIZ and lay the groundwork for your upcoming assignment, establishing new contacts and building up your network. Extensive check-ups and preventive measures (e.g. on appointment, before the outward journey, during the stay in a country of assignment, in an emergency) are provided to our staff and the family members accompanying them as a matter of course. As a development worker, you can use the project vehicle for trips to school or to visit a doctor or can receive a monthly lump-sum mobility allowance instead. The project vehicle can also be used for personal trips with your manager’s approval. As well as your basic living allowance, as a development worker you will also receive extensive additional benefits during your assignment (including a foreign service premium, family allowances, private group health insurance). To enable you to get ready for your assignment as a development worker and your outward journey, you will be given outward journey leave following your preparation time in Germany. We will cover a large portion of the childcare costs for dependent children under 14 who are accompanying you if your partner is not doing so and is not a development worker or integrated expert themselves. Most nursery and school fees are paid. We will reimburse you for your rental costs based on the rent index for your country as well as paying you an equipment and furnishing allowance on top. You and the members of your family accompanying you will be covered by our health and liability insurance, while your family members will also benefit from accident insurance. In countries in crisis, we operate a comprehensive risk management system for your protection, which minimises personal dangers and risks.

Your competencies and qualifications are demanded on the spot in an interdisciplinary team. You advise governmental and civil society organizations at local or municipal level. The Development Service of GIZ offers a comprehensive service package. It includes a specific technical and personal preparation. The basis for the deployment of specialists in the development service is the German Development Workers Act (EhfG).
